2016 年春天，我們坐 Amtrak（美國國鐵）到 Oregon 玩了一趟，這是我們第一次坐美國國鐵出門去玩。安排完行程之後，發現從灣區搭鐵路去 Oregon 玩其實蠻方便的，特別是若半路要停 Crater Lake national park 的話，可以很順地接續行程。前提是鐵路不要誤點，但這似乎是相當難的一件事，所以行程規畫上要有點彈性才行。
先分享行程如下：
This is our itinerary if you are thinking about taking Ametrak to visit Oregon, starting from Bay Area:
Day 0: Taking Amtrak Coast Starlight train #14, departing from Emeryville in late evening. Sleep on the train.
Day 1: Arriving at Klamath Falls early morning. Rent a car for day trip to Crater Lake National Park. Stay at Klamath Falls for the night.
Day 2: Continue on Amtrak Coast Starlight train #14 northbound. Arriving at Portland late afternoon.
Day 3: Spend the day visiting towns on the Pacific Coast. Stay at Portland
Day 4: Spend the day visiting sites in Columbia River Gorge. Stay at Government Camp.
Day 5: Visit Mount Hood. Spend the afternoon in Portland. Fly home late evening.

2015 New Mexico: White Sand National Monument
這次新墨西哥州的行程，我們再次造訪了我在 2010 年底曾經造訪，卻因為天候惡劣而無法完整看到景觀的白沙國家保護區。
上次我錯過的 Alkali Flat trail（因為風太大吹倒了路標而關閉），今天終於可以走了。這是一個 loop trail，一路帶遊客深入白沙遍地的沙丘，最後來到一個白色的沈積平原，雖然這只是一個 5 miles 左右，沒有海拔起伏的 trail，但因地理的特殊性，使得它相對地危險，trail head 告示牌上的警語也寫得特別長。首先，在這一路上，四面八方都是高高低低的白色沙丘，一望無際，唯一可以幫助遊客辨別方向的，是國家公園安插在沙地裡的橘紅色小路標，如果風沙造成能見度不佳，在走 trail 時無法看到下一個路標的話，就要循原路折返，不然一旦走進無邊無際，四面看起來都一個樣的白沙漠裡，就很容易迷路。沙漠氣候白天熱，夜晚冷，又容易脫水，出發之前也要特別注意有沒有帶夠水。另外因為白沙國家保護區附近就是飛彈試射場，告示還特別提醒遊客不要去碰路上發現的"不明物品"，萬一是炸彈就不好了。
讀完了長篇的警告之後，我們就沿著橘色路標出發了。一路上經過各種白沙地形，有比較軟的，高低起伏的沙丘，就像一般沙灘上走路的感覺，也有沙凝結之後，質地比較硬的平緩地面，有點像走在 dry wall 那種材質的板子上。雖然說是日正當中，但十二月天這開闊的白沙保護區其實還是很冷，穿著大外套走路感覺正好，很舒服。走著走著，竟然天上也飄下了小雪，落在一片白沙上，乍看之下分不出來是雪還是沙，非常有趣。
走完了這個 trail 之後，我們接下來到國家公園的馬路邊，找了個坡度合適的沙丘來練習滑沙。這是白沙保護區最受歡迎的活動，幾乎每台入園的車上，都載著從遊客中心買來的滑沙板（其實就是個長得像大垃圾筒蓋子的塑膠板），大家都各自找個自己喜歡的角落，坐在板子上從山坡頂一路滑下來。雖然說坡道很短，只滑個一兩秒就到底了，到底之後又得很費力地爬上坡才能再玩，而且圓形的滑沙板其實很容易旋轉，在山坡上反過來變成頭下腳上的怪異姿勢，但所有人都樂此不疲，一再地試驗自己能不能完美地衝下山坡。玩完之後，還可以把不知道還有什麼用的塑膠板賣回給遊客中心，我懷疑這個 national monument 每天靠重複買賣同一批塑膠板就可以賺不少錢。
離開白沙保護區之後，我們往今晚住宿的 Roswell 出發。New Mexico 在這一兩天受到大雪侵襲，一路上路邊都積滿了雪，我們進到 Roswell 鎮上的時候，路邊雪也是堆得老高。原來 Roswell 平時年降雪量是 12 吋，而過去兩天就足足降了 11 吋的雪，鎮上鏟雪設備嚴重不足的情形下，所有道路都只剩下一線勉強通車，還得順著前車留下的輪胎痕跡才不會迷路，剩下的路面和路肩都埋在雪中。對來自不下雪地方的我們來說，這真是難得一見的景象，特別拍幾張照片記下來，一邊祈禱明天能順利前往 Carlsbad Caverns - 前兩天連 interstate 都是封閉的，不過今天大雪已經停了。
